Ingredients

  • 12 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons maple extract
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup California walnuts, toasted and chopped
  • 35 walnut halves (optional)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Beat the butter and brown sugar until smooth. Mix in the egg. Mix in the maple syrup, maple extract and vanilla extract. Stir in the baking powder, salt, flour and walnuts.
  3. Place on parchment paper lined baking sheets 1 1/2 inches apart. Press a walnut half into the center of each, if desired. Bake until light golden brown, about 10 minutes.* Let cool before transferring to a wire rack.

*Increase bake time to 15 minutes if you prefer a crisper cookie.
