These nut rolls have been a tradition  for the Holidays in our family for almost 100 years. They make a delightful Holiday gift or for serving during the Holidays.  The recipe may sound hard but it is really very easy.  Some have tried to use other nuts, but only walnuts work!

PS:  I'm lucky enough to have a walnut tree in my yard!  YUM

Ingredients

Nut Roll filling:

1 Lb. chopped Walnuts

1 Cup Milk

1 Tb. Vanilla

1 Cup Sugar

Pastry:

2 Packets of Yeast

3 Tb. Sugar

1 Cup less 1 Tb. Warm, (not hot) water

4 egg yolks

4 cups Flour

1 t. salt

½ Cup Butter

4 egg whites (for brushing rolls)

Directions

Cook nut roll filling until it comes to a boil, over low heat, stirring often, then set aside to cool.

Mix the yeast, sugar and warm water, then set aside

Mix the flour, salt and butter like a pie dough, then make a "well" in the middle of the mixture

Add the yeast mixture with 4 egg yolks, then put into the "well", then mix the dough together.

Divide dough into 4 parts, roll out one part into a thin (1/4 in.) sheet and spread 1/4 of the nut mixture on top and roll up. Repeat for the other three parts.

Place the rolls on a parchment lined bakeing sheet. Brush each roll with egg white on top. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven 25-30 min until lightly browned.

Cool, slice on the diagonal, (1/2 in thick), and dust with powdered sugar.
