Round ball of fudgy cooikies, filled with a caramelly, walnutey filling. My inspiration was German Chocolate cake. I tweeked the frosting quite a bit from an original mother in law recipe, then I developed a great chocolaty thumbprint cookie, then covered the tops with chocolate ganache. Seems putsy, but it really isn't too bad.
By boiling the canned milk for an hour, it turns into a great caramel sauce - I often do this the day before baking the cookies.

Filling: Boil one can of UNOPENED sweetened condensed milk for one hour, totally emersed, cool. Use half of it for this recipe, use the other for a great ice cream topping - or double the recipe and use it all.

COOKIES -2 sticks butter or 2 sticks 'I can't believe it's not butter for baking'/ 1 1/3 c sugar (plus extra for rolling) / 2 egg yolks/ 2 tsp vanilla / 2 TB cream or milk/ 1 C Dutch Process Cocoa/ 2 tsp sea or kosher salt - coarse type / 1 tsp Baking Powder/ 2 C all purpose flour. I use the 'butter for baking' substitute.

Filling: Boil one can of UNOPENED sweetened condensed milk for one hour, totally emersed, cool. Use half of it for this recipe, use the other for a great ice cream topping - or double the recipe and use it all. It will turn into a great caramel color and flavor
Mix boiled 1/2 can sweetened condensed milk, 2 egg yolks/ 1 tsp vanilla/ 1/2 C. Sugar//3 ounces butter/ 1 cup coconut/ 1 cup CALIFORNIA WALNUTS, chopped, in heavy pan. Cook on med/low heat for 12-14 minutes, until very thick. cool.
Cookies: Cream butter and sugar, add yolks, beat well. Add the rest of the ingredients except flour, beat all well. Slowly add flour, just until combined. Roll into balls the size of a walnut, roll in sugar, place on parchment paper. Make indent in middle of each piece of cookie dough. Bake at 350 degrees approx 8-10 minutes (slightly undercooked). Make the same indent when cookies are done, this re-creates the well for the filling. Cool.
After cookies have cooled, fill with 1/2 -3/4 tsp of cooked and cooled filling.
Melt chocolate chips and shortening on low in microwave, stirring often.
Then top the filled part with melted chocolate/shortening, sprinkle with finely chopped WALNUTS.
