Ingredients

  • 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1-1/2 cups old fashioned oats
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk or (1/2 cup milk + 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1 tablespoon sugar for topping (optional)

Preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 375F.
  2. Combine all dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add butter to bowl using a pastry cutter or fingers until mixture resembles small crumbles.
  3. Add egg, milk, maple syrup and vanilla. Stir well.
  4. Stir in walnuts and raisins
  5. Place dough on a flour covered cutting board. Shape into a large circle. Cut into 8 triangles.
  6. Place scones on baking sheet lined with parchment or silicone mat.
  7. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden.
